Are You Using These Pillows and Devices?

U-Neck Pillow

This type of pillow has become very popular with travelers on the plane. The pillow is designed to let your head rest on the cushion. This pillows made of varying types of foam, poly fibers, buckwheat, beads, etc. Some of the products similar to this style have a modern look and shape. I used to have one you inflate it with air and comes in very handy but not comfortable. Just don’t forget to have your bib or drool towel under your chin!

Cervical or Neck Roll

Sometimes this is also called the McKenzie roll. The diameter ranges from 3-6 “ and usually made of different types of low density foam, poly fiber and sometimes other manufacturers will use batting to maintain certain shape. I find the foam a little too soft to accommodate the shape and support for my neck.

MFR Block

This is usually made of a hard very dense foam. There are quite a few different styles and shape on the market now. The idea is to release tension by placing the base of your skull where most “trigger points” are located. Usually after 10-15 minutes you would feel less tension in the tight muscles around your neck hence the “Myofascial Release”. Anything more than the treatment time can cause pins and needles and discomfort.

Contour Pillow

This type of pillow has two different ends. The person would have two options of using it, from a lower to a higher neck support. The user just has to figure out where is the best support and comfort for your head and neck. Unfortunately this type of pillow does not provide lateral support and can push you into more flexed position.

Foam Pillow

The foam pillow has come a long way. Many different materials have been incorporated with the memory foam, such as cooling gel, water sac embedded in foam, foam with hole punch,  shredded foam, feathers, latex, multi layer foam and some are ergonomically designed to accommodate the head and neck. I think it’s one of the most comfortable pillows on the market and this type of pillow does provide some lateral support.

These are just some of the sample pillows I have used in the past. Although I wouldn’t consider the Block as a pillow but more of a treatment device. The list of pillows and devices above has helped me minimize some of the muscle strain in my neck but others can cause more stress by hyperextending or flexing your head and neck. Most products on the market that I have tried only gave me optimal support, however some did reduce muscle tension and minimize joint strain.
